… is making a vampire record

That’s right kids: it’s finally happening. (Title Forthcoming) is Mirabai Kukathas’s upcoming vampire themed record - a contemplation on life after trauma and the monster within. The vampire comes alive (or at least un-dead) with Mirabai’s signature wit and warmth in a project informed by everything from literary classics to teen shlock to ancient myths.

The album is currently in pre-production with plans to be released in October 2026.

Why Vampires, Mirabai?

I think the first vampire thing I ever consumed was the Jimmy Neutron halloween special, which had a vampire in it and sufficiently terrified me. I was six and I became convinced that my cause of death would be vampire and it would be soon. I asked my dad about vampires and got a book from the library, but the information I learned was not comforting. I didn’t like my odds.

I remember one night, when I refused to go to sleep because I was so scared of vampires. My mother said “Mirabai, don’t you know vampires are made up?” I said, “Just because they’re made up doesn’t mean they’re not real!”. My mother then said “So if I made up a monster right now, named Blorky, who’s yellow and three feet tall and eats brains and is afraid of cheese… would you be afraid of him?” I think she was trying to teach me a lesson about the absurdity of my anxieties or maybe how creativity can be used to overcome fear, but for the next several weeks I was equally terrified of vampires and of Blorky - who I believed were in cahoots.

I eventually got over my fear of vampires by deciding to become one. I asked for a pair of plastic vampire teeth and simply told myself that if I was going to be obsessed with vampires, it had better be out of love rather than fear.

Vampire of the Open Mic

Please enjoy this video of the live performance of two unreleased vampire songs: Invite Me In - a song about the monstrous feeling loneliness and Immortal Child - a song about the draining nature of arrested development. This video was taken at Open Mic Night at Conor Byrne Pub in Ballard.

The Mirabai-Mandated Vampire Reading/Watch List

I could not have written this project without all those who wrote about vampires before me. Here are some of my favorites.

Books

  • Fledgling by Octavia E Butler

    • In my humble opinion: this should NOT be your first Octavia Butler book. Read her other stuff first, fall in love (you will! if you have taste!), and then come back to Fledgling. Many trigger warnings for this book, but like all of Butler’s work it’s evocative and strange and beautiful and you think about it for ages after finishing.

  • Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu

    • A vampire literary classic (now with heavy lesbian “subtext”! )

  • Dracula by Bram Stoker

    • Duly rated. Rocks so hard.

  • The Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice

    • The Vampire Chronicles is famously a little hit and miss and rather divisive. This is my favorite installment.

Movies/TV Shows

  • Sinners (2025, film)

    • One of the most incredible theater experiences of my life. Saw it 4 times the summer it came out - wasn’t enough.

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003, series)

    • Might be my favorite show of all time.

  • Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (2023, film)

    • Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant. This movie is very sweet and tender. TW: suicidality

  • Interview with the Vampire (2022- , series)

    • watch it watch it watch it i am hypnotizing you watch it

  • Angel (1999. 2004)

    • Season 4 is some of the worst stuff ever put to television, but if you’re gonna watch Buffy you may as well also watch Angel.
