Songs to the Monster Under My Bed

Songs to the Monster Under My Bed is my debut album. It's a collection of songs I wrote between the ages of 15 and 18, all in some way or another about my relationship with fear. Making this project and the folks who made it with me are what kept me sane during the pandemic. This album features the work of myself, Matt "Sabyu" Sablan, Grafton Downs, Zoser Dunbar, Olivia Green, Michael Grant, Thaddeus Turner, Daniel Pak, Zora Seboulisa, Lashaunycee “LASH” O’Cain, Cirrus Levine, and Betsy Siegal.

Rosaline is who Romeo is in love with before (and promptly forgets about after) meeting Juliet. She never appears on stage or has any lines and is more of a plot device than a character. She’s treated (both by Romeo and by Shakespeare himself) as replaceable and forgettable. But, unlike Romeo, Juliet or Paris, she doesn’t die at the end of the play. So, I decided to write a song to Rosaline and ask her a few questions. This song features the work of myself, Matt "Sabyu" Sablan, Grafton Downs, Zoser Dunbar, Olivia Green, and Erica Gill.

Candyland is about leaning into despair, terror, and isolation, not because those things are enjoyable but because they are familiar. It’s about seeking comfort (that you’re never gonna get) in the cold embrace of sadness. It was my first attempt at writing a Joan Baez-type folk song and my first time recording guitar. This song features the work of myself, Matt "Sabyu" Sablan, Grafton Downs, and Erica Gill.

Canary is the first song I ever wrote all by myself. It’s an ode to physical, mental, and emotional sensitivity written after an infamous incident where I sobbed my eyes out at a Subaru commercial. In my defense, there was an elderly dog in the commercial and I was dealing with a health diagnosis that prevented me from singing. Writing Canary was how I discovered my songwriting voice. It song features the work of myself, Matt "Sabyu" Sablan, Thaddeus Turner, Daniel Pak, and Erica Gill.

Belly Ache is a silly little love song I wrote with my friend and colleague LASH when we were sixteen, back before I even started thinking of myself as a songwriter. It’s about being queer and insecure and awkward and young and and in love and all of those feelings being a little more than you can handle. Belly Ache features vocals, melody, and some lyrics by myself, the majority of lyrics by Lashauncyee “LASH” O’Cain, guitar, bass, and production by Matt "Sabyu" Sablan and Daniel Pak, and cover photography by Erica Gill.
